Tidbits on the most famous house in the USA
Did you know the White House was original natural gray?
Yep, the building is made of sandstone which is natural gray in color. It takes 570 gallons of paint to cover the White House surface with white paint.
Are you a maintenance person and wondered what it takes to operate the White House?
Well, there are 132 rooms to clean and care for. Of the 132 rooms, there are 32 bathrooms, 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 7 staircases, 3 elevators, a movie theater, billiard room and bowling lane. Now that's a lot of real estate to take care of! Plus don't forget the grounds that include a jogging track, swimming pool and tennis courts. There are approximately 6,000 visitors received every day as guests. That's a lot of foot traffic to clean up after, yes? Just the thought of cleaning 147 windows, makes me want to quit yesterday.
Did you know the "White House" wasn't always called the "White House"?
Originally it was called the "President's Palace" or "President Mansion" and labeled "Executive Mansion" on the government letterhead. It was Teddy Roosevelt that established the formal name of "White House - Washington" on all government stationery. I think Teddy's relabeling was a great effort to make the citizens feel that this entity is ours, and not the Elite. I'm sure the architect, James Hoban, would agree. Do you?
